Salt Water Can Also Fool You About Hydration

You can drink fresh water to replace fluids lost through sweating.
Seawater is different.
Because it contains a high concentration of salt, drinking seawater does not effectively hydrate you. Your kidneys need to excrete excess salt, and doing so requires water.
In other words, drinking seawater can actually worsen dehydration.
This matters during long beach days because you can lose water through sweating while swimming, exercising, or simply sitting in the summer heat.
You may be surrounded by billions of gallons of water and still become dehydrated.
You Can Become Dehydrated Without Realizing It
Swimming can make thirst less obvious.
When you are exercising in the water, you may not notice sweat evaporating from your skin in the same way you would during a run.
Combine swimming with hot weather, direct sunlight, and hours at the beach, and fluid loss can quietly accumulate.
Dehydration can increase cardiovascular strain by reducing the amount of fluid available for circulation.
That is why hydration remains important even when your entire body is surrounded by water.
The Ocean Is Not Automatically Better or Worse for Your Heart
Salt water itself is not a cardiovascular medicine, nor is ocean swimming inherently dangerous for healthy people.
The real story is much more interesting.
Ocean swimming combines several factors that affect the cardiovascular system:

Enter very cold water gradually rather than suddenly jumping in. Stay hydrated with fresh water, particularly during long periods outdoors. Avoid pushing yourself beyond your fitness level, and pay attention to symptoms such as unusual chest discomfort, severe shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting.

Your Heart Has a Relationship With the Sea
We usually imagine the ocean acting on the outside of our bodies.
